“Until Jesus is enough for you, nothing else will be.”
That one stopped me.
Because I think I’ve spent so much of my life believing that if I could just get the next thing, I would finally feel okay.
If I could have the marriage I prayed for.
If someone loved me the way I wanted to be loved.
If my family looked the way I imagined it would.
If I felt more secure.
If life became a little easier.
If I finally reached the version of my life I had pictured in my head.
Then I would feel whole.
But the problem with asking people or circumstances to make us whole is that they were never designed to carry that weight.
People change. Relationships change. Plans fall apart. Seasons end. The things we thought would finally satisfy us eventually leave us wanting something else.
And sometimes God allows the things we leaned on the hardest to be stripped away.
Not because He is cruel.
But because sometimes we don’t realize how much we’ve made something else our foundation until it starts shaking.
I’ve had to learn this in a season I never would have chosen.
There have been moments when I wanted someone to rescue me from the loneliness, reassure me that I was still lovable, or make everything that happened feel worth it somehow.
And God keeps bringing me back to the same place:
Me and Him.
Before the relationship.
Before the validation.
Before the answered prayer.
Before the life I hope to have someday.
Is Jesus enough for me here?
Not when everything works out.
Not when I understand why it happened.
Not when I finally get what I’ve been praying for.
Here.
In the waiting.
In the rebuilding.
In the quiet.
In the life I didn’t expect.
Because I can spend my entire life chasing something to fill a place that belongs to God.
A relationship can be beautiful, but it cannot save me.
Marriage can be a gift, but it cannot sustain my soul.
Being wanted can feel wonderful, but another person’s affection cannot determine my worth.
Success cannot give me peace.
A perfect-looking life cannot make me whole.
Only Jesus can carry that kind of weight.
And maybe that’s what this season has been teaching me.
I can want good things without making them ultimate things.
I can pray for love and still know I am already deeply loved.
I can desire companionship without believing I am incomplete without it.
I can hope for a beautiful future without needing that future in order to have peace today.
Because when Jesus becomes enough, everything else gets to return to its proper place.
A gift.
Not a god.
Something I can be grateful for without depending on it to hold me together.
I’m still learning this.
There are still days when I look for reassurance in people before I look for it in Him. Days when I want something tangible to make me feel safe. Days when surrender feels much harder than it sounds.
But maybe faith isn’t reaching a point where we never want anything else.
Maybe it’s being able to say:
God, I want this. I hope for this. I’m praying for this.
But even without it, I still have You.
And You are enough.
Because until Jesus is enough for me,
nothing else will be.
